We understand that the prospect of surgery for your pet can be worrying. At Agave Grove Animal Hospital, we provide surgical care for dogs and cats in North Scottsdale with a focus on thorough preparation, attentive monitoring, and clear communication, so that you and your pet are supported through every stage of the process.
From routine procedures such as spays and neuters to soft-tissue surgery, each procedure is planned around your pet’s individual health, age, and needs. We explain the recommended procedure, what to expect on the day, and the expected recovery before surgery is scheduled, and we provide written aftercare instructions and ongoing support once your pet returns home.

What to Expect on the Day of Surgery
We will ask you to withhold food the night before surgery; water is fine. Your pet is admitted in the morning, and we will contact you once the procedure is complete with an update and to arrange pickup, which is typically the same afternoon. At discharge, you will receive written aftercare instructions, any prescribed medications, and guidance on what to watch for during recovery. A complimentary follow-up exam is scheduled to check the incision and remove sutures if needed.
Frequently Asked Questions
When should I spay or neuter my pet?
The best timing depends on your pet’s species, breed, and size. Cats are typically spayed or neutered at around five to six months of age. For dogs, and particularly large breeds, waiting until growth is complete may reduce the risk of certain joint and health concerns. We will discuss the most appropriate timing for your pet during a wellness visit.
Will my pet be in pain after surgery?
Some soreness is expected for a day or two, and it is managed. Pain medication is given before surgery begins and continues at home, and we will adjust the plan if your pet does not appear comfortable.
Why is bloodwork recommended before anesthesia?
A pet can appear healthy while having changes in kidney, liver, or blood values that affect which medications are appropriate. Pre-anesthetic bloodwork allows us to tailor the anesthetic plan to your pet and helps identify concerns before the procedure.
How much does surgery cost?
You will receive a written estimate before surgery is scheduled. It covers the examination, bloodwork, anesthesia, the procedure, monitoring, medications, and the complimentary follow-up exam.
