Preventive care is the most effective way to protect your pet’s long-term health. At Agave Grove Animal Hospital, we develop a preventive care plan for each patient that reflects their age, lifestyle, and the unique environment of North Scottsdale, including appropriate vaccinations, year-round parasite prevention, microchipping, and nutrition guidance.
Living in the Sonoran Desert shapes the risks our pets face. Valley fever, ticks, mosquitoes during the monsoon season, and extended periods of extreme heat all influence what protection a dog or cat in this area may need. A pet who hikes regularly in Cave Creek and an indoor cat in Terravita will not need the same plan, and we tailor our recommendations accordingly.
Vaccinations
Core vaccines are recommended for every pet. For dogs, these include rabies, distemper, parvovirus, adenovirus, and leptospirosis. For cats, they include rabies, feline distemper (panleukopenia), herpesvirus, and calicivirus. In Arizona, rabies vaccination is required by law for dogs and is recommended for cats.
Lifestyle vaccines are recommended based on your pet’s individual risk. For dogs, these may include Bordetella and canine influenza for pets who visit boarding facilities, daycare, or grooming. For cats who spend time outdoors, we may recommend the feline leukemia vaccine. Puppies and kittens receive a series of vaccinations beginning at approximately eight weeks of age, and adult pets receive boosters on a one- or three-year schedule depending on the vaccine.
Parasite Prevention
Heartworm disease is transmitted by mosquitoes and is present in Maricopa County, so we recommend year-round heartworm prevention for dogs. Fleas and ticks are seasonal but present in our area, and ticks can transmit disease. We recommend an annual fecal examination to screen for intestinal parasites. Most pets do well on a single monthly preventive that protects against several parasites at once, and we will recommend the product best suited to your pet.
Microchipping
A microchip is a small, permanent form of identification placed beneath the skin during a routine visit or at the time of a spay or neuter. It significantly improves the chances that a lost pet will be returned home. We register the microchip for you and will show you how to keep your contact information current.
Nutrition and Weight Management
Maintaining a healthy weight is one of the most important factors in your pet’s comfort and longevity. Every wellness visit includes an assessment of body condition, and when appropriate, we provide practical guidance on diet, portion sizes, and feeding routines to help your pet maintain a healthy weight throughout their life.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does my indoor cat need vaccines?
Yes. Although rabies vaccination is not legally required for cats in Arizona, we recommend it, along with the core feline vaccines, because viruses can be carried into the home on shoes and clothing. Lifestyle vaccines such as feline leukemia are generally reserved for cats who spend time outdoors.
Is heartworm disease a concern in the desert?
Yes. Mosquitoes breed in irrigation, pools, and monsoon runoff, and heartworm-positive dogs are diagnosed in the Phoenix area every year. Year-round prevention is far simpler and less costly than treatment.
Can vaccines be given during a house call?
Yes. Most preventive care, including vaccinations, parasite prevention, and microchipping, is available through our mobile veterinary care service.
